How to use local search engine optimization to get more business

You can use the local business directories to generate more leads for your services, especially if most of your customers are local.

Some of these frequently used websites include Google Maps, Yahoo Local, Bing, Yelp, CitySearch and InsiderPages. They can work well for increasing your search engine visibility and building more links back to your website.

Here are some tips to help you use local search engine optimization to generate more leads:

1. Claim and enhance your free business listings.

Go to these various business directories, locate your business, setup an account and ensure that your business information is correct. Sometimes, these companies will ask to call you to verify your information.

Also, often, these business directories will give you the opportunity to add additional information about your establishment – including your website, hours of operation, payments accepted and other information. I recommend that you make these profiles as complete as possible.

Here are some sites to get you started:

  • Google.com/places (Google Business Center)
  • Yahoo
  • Bing
  • Yelp
  • YellowPages.com
  • CitySearch.com
  • MerchantCircle.com
  • Yelp.com
  • WhitePages.com (including 411.com, PhoneNumber.com and Address.com)

2. Add pictures of your business.

You should consider adding any pictures of your business that may be of interest to your prospects.

3. Make sure that your profile is complete.

The more information that you can provide, the better. I recommend listing your hours, address, e-mail address, website, services provided, contact info, etc.

Also, you should consider adding a paragraph or two about your business stating what you do, who you work with, why prospects should choose you and what services / products you provide.

4. Include a special offer

Many of these websites will allow you to list special offers that your business provides. Your special offer could be a free consultation or 20% off a certain service that you offer.

5. Get reviews

When your prospects are looking for businesses like yours online, they want to see reviews from other customers. If you don’t have any, then it is important to get some.

You may want to consider asking customers to post reviews of your business on Google if they give you a compliment on the work that you’ve done.

6. Avoid posting fake reviews.

Although it is tempting to post a fake review of your business online, especially if you don’t have any, it hurts your online reputation in the long run. Many of your customers can spot fake reviews right away, because they look insincere. Also, many online business directories now have systems in place to block fake reviews.

7. Respond to negative reviews

When someone complains about your products or services online, you should humbly acknowledge your mistake, address their concern and take steps toward resolving the customer complaint. It helps to show customers that you care about their concerns.
